Biomass

Biomas cycle

You can heat your home or other commercial premises using modern, efficient boiler systems to burn logs, wood chip, or wood pellets.

Biomass systems are also available to produce electricity and a combination of heat and power.

Advantages of bio-fuels

  • CO2 released equals the amount absorbed during the crop's growth
• Biomass is a renewable
• Plentiful fuel sources in forestry and agriculture waste
• Established technology
• Can provide local employment to keep money in the local and national economy (self-sufficiency)

We can provide biomass systems for the domestic & commercial sectors based on the following fuel options.

Wood chip

Wood chipThis is usually delivered into a store from where it may be automatically fed to the boiler, some times there is a larger store on site and mechanical handling is required to move the chip to the automatic feed store. Wood chip is usually best for the larger heating systems and / or working farms where mechanical handling is already owned. Dry storage space is required and the boiler will require regular maintenance.

Wood pellets

Biomass wood pelletsThis burns very effectively because it has a low moisture and ash content, they are compact and easy to store. There is a choice for the homeowner between pellet boilers and pellet stoves (some stoves will run 6+ radiators) the boilers require quite a lot of space (2m x 2m x 2.5m min) plus the space required for the pellet store. The pellets are both obtained in 15Kg bags or by bulk delivery and blown into purpose made store (2m x 3m x2m). Depending upon the amount of pellets used, bags are best bought by the pallet load for manual filling of boiler or stove’s hopper. Dry storage space is required and the stove / boiler will require regular maintenance.

Points about pellet stoves;

  • Attractive looking appliances with the focal point of a visible flame Good for smaller properties where the space for a plant room is not available
• Biomass is a renewable
• Plentiful fuel sources in forestry and agriculture waste
• Established technology
• Can provide local employment to keep money in the local and national economy (self-sufficiency)

We can provide biomass systems for the domestic & commercial sectors based on the following fuel options.

Oil Seed Rape (OSR) boilers

These boilers require special oil tanks but offer a competitive installation option over chip and pellets but with higher running costs. They are due to be made available with dual fuel burners so allowing for peace of mind while the biomass fuel supply develops.

Fuel transportation

The transport of fuel can cause pollution and generally it is not recommended to transport wood chip much more than 10 to 15 miles, wood pellets can be transported further due to their lower moisture content.
Although at a practical level while the market is establishing itself the fuel may end up coming from further a field. This will resolve itself over time as local farmers and forestry diversify into biomass and supply companies emerge to take advantage of the demand that new biomass heating systems will create.

Planning permission

This may be required if new construction is needed and may not be available to households in smokeless zones unless your boiler system is an exempted appliance. New flues can also sometimes be an issue especially if the property is listed

Large bio-energy installations may require additional industrial process permissions from the Environment Agency
